Project Success Hawk Award - Photos!
Today we were able to present our first ever Project Success Drug Education/Red Oak ISD PD “K-9 Hawk Character Counts” award at ROJH. Red Oak Jr. High Winner: This year Project Success Drug Education and Principal Kathy Teer is proud to announce SEAN STANTON as the winner of the K-9 Hawk Character Counts Award 2009.

Congratulations SEAN for making Red Oak ISD a better place for all of us. I am proud for him. I had never met him before last year and have never worked with him as a student other than during lunch time and in the hallways when he needed somebody to talk to. What an awesome recognition.

It brought tears to my eyes when I heard his name. Mrs. Ewers looked at me and said, “Isn’t that your little friend that always talks to you?” This young man is very capable of a lot of things if people would just get to know him. He has a good heart and cares. Special thanks to Mrs. Donna Knight for the idea, hard work on getting the trophies and taking these great photos!

Renaissance Website New LOOK!!
www.renaissance.isgreat.org
After concluding the "Who I Am Makes A Difference" campaign, the ROHS Renaissance and Ryan Garr of the ROHS Student Web Design Team designed a new look of the Renaissance website. After concluding the WIAMAD campaign, they wanted to re-design the site to focus on Renaissance as a whole instead of only one project.

The new website design was officially switched over on May 30th. Check out the new look by going to www.renaissance.isgreat.org. The new Renaissance Website is up and running and it looks great! Ryan Garr, a junior here at the high school spent the last couple of months creating this site.

He spent countless hours working on it here at school as well as at home, and met with Mrs. Guerrero and Mrs. Fagan multiple times to make sure his clients were happy. I’m very proud of him and also thrilled he’s only a Junior and will be around next year to keep making great sites for Red Oak!

Coach Rob Hampton and Assistant Coach Toni Williams planned a super Field Day last week at ERE. First and second graders held their Field Day on Thursday while third and fourth graders had theirs on Friday.

Eastridge Canned Food Drive - Photos!
Eastridge went all out this week to make a difference in the lives of others as they contributed to a canned food drive sponsored by the Customer Care Committee from ERE. On the final day of the one-week drive, every class had cans in its boxes! Many were filled to overflowing.

The winning class was Mrs. Jackson, followed by Mrs. Pevehouse and then Mrs. Ringhauser. Each of these classes gave more than three full boxes of canned goods, convenience foods, cereal, etc. to help out families who come to the North Ellis County Outreach Center for a little help to put food on the table.
Eastridge Lights! Camera! Action - Photos!
Mrs. Cook’s first grade class at Eastridge Elementary recently presented a play called The Little Orange Clownfish for selected guests at ERE.

This project incorporated a multitude of skills from the genre of writing plays to characters, setting and scenery. The class worked together to create the script, which was an adaptation of The Little Red Hen, a story in the first grade basal reader.

The class transferred its comprehension of the story theme to that of ocean animals, which is what they were studying in science. Art was added as each child created a sea creature mask to wear during the play. Rehearsal of the script taught not only editing, but fluency as well.

Finally, behavior skills and teamwork were added character traits as these first graders prepared for receiving an audience for their presentation.
Snakes Visit Eastridge - Photos!
Mark and Kathy Higginbotham came to Eastridge last week with a couple of very special guests. Only these visitors couldn’t wear visitor’s badges into the building as required. The visitors were their son Marshall’s Ball Python snakes.

The girl snake, named Sapphire, is one year old. Marshall has had her since last July. Ironhide is the name of the boy snake, which Marshall has had for 10 months. He became Marshall’s pet last September. The pet snakes were seen by approximately 160 students in 5 classrooms.

Mark’s dad discusses snakes as son Marshall, a 4th grade student at ERE, assists Marshall demonstrates how to handle the snakes: very carefully! Kindergarten students watch as snake is shown to them Mark and Kathy Higginbotham teach about snakes to classes at Eastridge.

Poetry-n-Punch Spices Up ROI - Photos!
On May 12, Brittany Kutchs 5th grade classroom at Red Oak Intermediate was transformed into a poetry cafe. The classroom lights were set low, with electric candles, lamps, white lights draping from the ceiling and lava lamps all around. Soft music played in the background to set the mood.

Students sat atop stools, and read a poem they wrote and published as well as a poem from a poetry book. They recited and performed 2 poems as a class using small props to add a little psaz! The setting was reminiscent of a 1950s coffeehouse, but without the berets and goatees.

Parents were invited to snack on cookies and punch while sitting at small round bistro tables. After each reading, students and parents snapped their fingers. The Poetry-N-Punch Day ended with a class poem entitled "When I Grow Up..."
