Visit to Savannah - New Miley Cyrus Movie!
Miley Cyrus New Film Set - See Photos Behind the Scenes
Hawk Eye News Producer & Media Technology Teacher, Allen J. Oliver visits Savannahs Tybee Island as filming of the NEW Miley Cyrus movie begins. The movie features 16-year-old Cyrus, the star of "Hannah Montana," as a teenage girl struggling with her parents divorce who tries to reconnect with her father during a summer at his home in a quiet beach town.

The Walt Disney Co. had considered making the film in North Carolina, but ultimately chose Georgia because the state offered a better incentive package. Local officials estimate the production will bring $8 million in direct spending to the area during the next two months. Having Tybee Islands name on the screen - on signs for a beach festival and emblazoned on police cars and fire trucks - should make for an even bigger payday after the movie hits theaters in 2010.

Excitement continued to spread across Tybee Island on Monday as spectators viewed the continuation of filming of the carnival scene for "The Last Song." Much of the south end of the beach was closed as the cast, crew members and hundreds of extras worked on the film starring Miley Cyrus.

Mr. Oliver said, "It was exciting to be able to tell my students back at Red Oak High School the expierences of movie making, there is nothing like it!" " My wife is from Savannah so it was a great trip, seeing her family and visiting Downtown Savannah and Tybee Island!"

ROI Helps Preserve the Rainforests!
The students at Red Oak Intermediate have something extraordinary to celebrate this year - they have actively participated in a conservation project in order to better their world! The students in Mrs. Angie Peterson’s Science class and Mrs. Wisdom-Schluter’s GT English / Language Arts class took part in a special rainforest project being conducted in thousands of schools across the country via a special network of educators called Earth Foundation.

By selling environmental T-shirts, ROI students raised funds that will help protect plants and animals in the rainforests of Madagascar. So far, ROI has protected 31.5 acres of endangered land. According to Earth Foundation, a Houston-based environmental education organization, rainforests really do need rescuing. At present, half of the world’s rainforests have been burned and bulldozed.

According to the Rainforest Action Network (RAN), an area of rainforest the size of a football field is destroyed every second! At this rate of destruction, tropical forests will vanish within 30 years. In the balance lie thousands of plant and animal species, indigenous tribal groups, and the health of our planet.

Rainforests play an essential role in our weather, the prevention of global warming, reduce erosion, and provide a bounty of riches including hardwoods, rubber, food, and medicines. (Pharmacologists have identified over 2,000 tropical plants with cancer-fighting properties!) Clearly humankind faces a tremendous loss.

Although the fate of the rainforest is indeed dire, there are reasons to be hopeful. Earth Foundation believes that the next generation brings hope. The organization empowers young people by providing educational materials that teach about solutions like Conservation Internationals efforts in Madagascar and sustainable uses of the rainforests that do not require deforestation.

Students also learn about the impact of consumer choices on rainforests, how recycling helps the rainforest, and a way to express their concerns and opinions to governmental leaders and corporations. Red Oak Intermediate encourages other schools to join their efforts in the race to rescue fragile ecosystems.
